Postdocs
I have an open postdoctoral position to work on understanding the role of forest functional and structural diversity in regulating vertical profiles of canopy fluxes within Earth system models. For more information, please see the link to the application here. Application closes November 24, 2025.
Interested in a postdoc but this position isn't the right fit? I am also happy to pursue external funding opportunities with prospective postdoctoral researchers.

Graduate Students
Interested in a thesis-based MS or PhD?
Open Positions:
PhD Candidate: Improving agricultural management in an Earth system model (Fall 2026)
I have an opening for one PhD student join a collaborative project that explores the impacts of ‘climate-smart’ agricultural management practices on soil carbon and the social and environmental factors that influence farmer adoption rates. The PhD student will focus on improving the representation of agricultural management in the Community Land Model and will be supported for 3 years by an NSF DISES project as a Graduate Research Assistant and for two semesters as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. The position is in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University, based in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Research project: The PhD student will 1) work to develop a representation of cover crops in the Community Land Model (CLM) and will 2) run and analyze simulations with cover crops and other types of management (tillage, residue management) that are represented in the model to understand the role of agricultural management on soil properties and processes. Results from these simulations will be used in surveys, interviews, and focus groups with farmers, which will iteratively help to guide the model development process.
Qualifications: Candidates must have Bachelor's degree in ecology, environmental sciences, Earth system science, or similar, and ideally have previous research experience, ability to code (Python, R, Fortran, etc), experience using and developing process-based ecosystem or Earth system models, an understanding of agricultural management and its roles in changing soils and climate, and strong data management and analysis skills.
Application details: To be considered for the position, applicants will need to submit an official application to the "Ecosystem Sustainability PhD" via the CSU Graduate School Admissions portal. Please visit the Ecosystem Science and Sustainability PhD Information webpage to view the application requirements. Please note that the GRE requirement has been waived. For full consideration, please submit all materials by February 1st, 2025 and ensure your qualifications for the position are clearly highlighted in your resume and statement of purpose. The position will remain open until filled.
Other opportunities
I am happy to explore pursuing external funding opportunities with prospective students.
I encourage all eligible applicants interested in a thesis-based degree to apply for external funding opportunities, such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
Interested in a non-thesis MS?
Students interested in a non-thesis professional masters may wish to explore the Ecosystem Science & Sustainability Professional Science Masters (ESS-PSM) program.
